Plants that you can still get in the ground, and enjoy for the rest of the summer:
Geranium: very drought tolerant, water every day for the first two weeks then water once or twice a week for 20 minutes, keep water off of the flower.
Vinca: "sun hogs," like it dry, will rot if they are over-watered.
Begonia: dual purpose plant, they grow well in sun and shade, drought tolerant
Carex ("care-ex"): extremely large family of low growing grass plants. Suited for soil that drain quickly and dry out because they have fibrous roots, loves well drained soil
Day Lily (he's bringing a re-blooming Stella): grows well in moist, dry, compacted, dense soil
