PLANT
PROFILE:
Beautyberry Callicarpa dichotoma
This is a unique shrub that provides a beautiful show in late fall.
This shrub will often go unnoticed for the entire season until the late
summer as the clusters of small pink flowers give way to bunches of glossy,
neon purple fruit.
By late fall, this amazing shrub is truly decked out as its magnificent
berries glow in the autumn sun.
The show becomes truly spectacular once the leaves have been shed and
before the birds discover the berries. You will attract several songbirds
as they feast on your beautyberry in late fall. This is a shrub you want
to plant in a group, foundation planting or prominent spot to show it
off.
Common beautyberry is a compact grower that will reach four-feet in
height with a similar spread. Plant it in full-sun to partial shade and
provide moist, well-drained soil. This plant will adapt to a wide range
of conditions. You can prune to control size in late winter. Renewal
prune to 12-inches high if the plant becomes too overgrown.
